Botox Cosmetic injections are known primarily for their ability to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, being the eyes, forehead and between the eyebrows the most common areas. Moreover, it is used to treat other issues such as neck spasms, excessive sweating, overactive bladder and lazy eye.
These injections apply a toxin known as onabotulinumtoxina to temporarily prevent a muscle from moving. Other products now include abobotulinumtoxina are: Dysport, Xeomin and Jeuvou. These are all a type of botulinum toxin which is used to prevent, treat and maintain a smoother, healthier skin by relaxing the muscles that cause our worry lines, laugh lines, crow’s feet and smoker’s line.
They are a bit different from each other, especially when it comes to dosage units, so they are not interchangeable. Here at AMIS MedSpa we mostly use Dysport and Botox Cosmetic as these have been giving consistent and predictable results in more than 96% of our patients.
Once the essential units have been determined, the specialist will clean the skin and inject directly into the skin and muscles of the face with a thin needle to insert small amounts of botulinum toxin. The number of required units depends on many factors, such as the size of the area being treated.
The procedure takes less than an hour and the patient will have little or no discomfort. The muscles are paralyzed, leading to the disappearance or softening of wrinkles.
An initial consultation will be always required to determine the needed units, the area, and possible side effects will be discussed. Usually just one session is compulsory, but a second medical visit is demanded iif deciding any area needs reinforcement after 15 days.
For a correct recovery avoiding saunas or swimming pools is a must as these elements can reduce the effect of the treatment. Most importantly patients should avoid friction of the treated area, as well as not massage, not make-up and do not touch in general the treated area during the next 4-6 hours after the treatment. Patients should neither practice sports in 24 hours following the procedure. It is suggested to gesticulate with the treated area in an exaggerated way during the 4 hours after the treatment to help the distribution and harmony of the area. Last but not least, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.
With botulinum toxin injections patients will start seeing results 5-7 days after treatment. Depending on the matter being treated, the effect may last from 3 to 4 months or longer. To maintain the effect, patients will need regular follow-up injections.
